Come on in and take a tour...

Inside Our Classroom

Across the hallway from our door you will find these eager frogs beckoning students to
"Leap Into Learning!"  After the schoolyear gets under way I will be adding some student work
to this 'hoppy" bulletin board.

I found this welcome sign at a store called "DEALS".  (It's one of those - "everything for a dollar" stores.)

This is the doorway to our classroom.  I saw this adorable idea on another teacher's site and decided to try it myself.  The words read, "I'm So Hoppy You Are Here!"  I would love to give proper credit, but can't remember exactly where I saw the idea..  I will provide a link to the correct teacher's site as
soon as possible.

The wall opposite the door contains our Word Wall.  It is a train that I made myself.  Each car contains a letter of the alphabet.  Throughout the year we will add sight words and other important words under each letter.  I'm afraid that there is not much space under some of the letters for the number of words we will use.  But, wall space was limited.  I may eventually need to make my train cars smaller to allow for more words.
For information on using word walls in the classroom you can visit the Four Blocks website.

CALENDAR MATH

Here is our calendar ready for the first day of school.  Each day we will find and write the month, day of the week, and the date; create Incredible Equations for the day's date; identify whether the date is an odd or even number; discuss the season; graph the weather; and count loose change equal to the day's date.  On the right side of our calendar is another graph for the following question - "Do you like frogs?" (Thanks Mrs. Attaya for this idea!) We will graph our answers to a different question once or twice a week.

As the year progresses there will be more elements added to our Calendar Math time.

I would like to dedicate the next few pictures to Mrs. Kelli Wilt, a fantastic Kindergarten teacher from Lynchburg, VA.  I "hopped" into her website (The Learning Leap) early in the summer and simply fell in love with all the wonderful "froggy" ideas.  I have incorporated many of them into my own classroom.

Thanks, Kelli, for the ideas and inspiration!

HOP TO IT!
I really liked Kelli's twist on the behavior board.  Each child starts with his/her frog cutout on the big lilypad.  If a rule is broken the child's frog moves to the blue water (warning).  If the misbehavior continues the child's frog moves to the log (5 minute loss of recess or time-out).  If the child's behavior does not improve his/her frog will be moved to the fish's belly.  More recess time will be lost and a note will be sent home.  In some instances the child may be asked to visit the principal.

Here you see my favorite buy of the summer.  This adorable plush frog came from TJ Maxx.  (Kelli, I went looking for the cute frog pillow you mentioned finding at TJ Maxx, but found this instead.  He was a bit more expensive than the frog pillow, but my daughter convinced me that I HAD to have him! :)  He is sitting in my rocking chair which has been decorated with new "froggy" chair cushions.  They are made from left-over carpet padding (Thanks, Dad!) covered with fabric purchased at Wal-Mart.
